With my constant scrolling for entertainment, my For You Page overflowed with influencers’ videos, allowing TikTok to become more than just a form of entertainment. My days were already filled with boredom, and my first instinct was to open TikTok by habit.
Instead of locking in on my homework, after every pause I took, I found myself hours later, yet again, on TikTok. The addiction had become so bad that the thought of losing it stressed me beyond words. What was I supposed to do in my free time?
However, losing the app would have probably benefited my grades, as I was not about to switch to Instagram Reels. I might have actually had a chance to finish my homework before 10 p.m., but I am overall happy TikTok has not left us.
No matter the time, place or crowd, TikTok has become the first thing I think of to replace my boredom when I am at a loss for things to do. Even when I must be quiet, watching TikTok with no volume is still my way to go.
TikTok in a way has become my safe place. It knows more about me than I feel I know myself, and though that is creepy, it also is my place to cope.
Beyond coping, TikTok is also where I, as well as more than half the girls at Miami Palmetto Senior High, get their style from. With influencers like Demetra Dias, it has become normal to wear the outfits she displays because they are so cute.
TikTok is one of the reasons I re-watch shows and movies, as well as get introduced to them. Ranging from Netflix movies to the short reels that don’t let you see part two, I become so hooked I forget that I am wasting valuable time.
Although I despise the fact that I can’t focus on my work, almost losing TikTok allowed me to realize how much I love the app. As said in “10 Things I Hate About You,” a movie I would not have watched if it was not for TikTok, “Mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you. Not even close, not even at all.”
