On May 24,19 students and two adults—all in one fourth grade classroom —were shot and killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. The shooter, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, entered the school with full-body armor and two loaded AR-15s. 

The shooting occurred in a time span of fewer than 20 minutes, beginning at 11:40 Central Time and ending before noon.

Ramos entered the school without being confronted by a school district police officer after crashing his vehicle and entered through a door that was seemingly unlocked. In leaked social media messages, Ramos revealed that he had killed his grandmother and was going to shoot Robb Elementary.

The death toll started at 14 but rose to 21 after several hours of investigation. Police were criticized heavily for reportedly taking too long to enter the school and classroom and for not being able to take down the shooter for several minutes.
