A raspy, soulful voice penetrates through the radio, lyrics of lost loves pulling the heartstrings of people all over the world. This voice could only belong to one artist: Adele. Her debut album “19,” released in 2008, sold an estimated 5 million copies, while her second album “21” received even more acclaim spending 13 weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard 200 and selling over 12 million copies worldwide.
“I think Adele is a stunning performer who I praise not only for her vocals, but her heartfelt lyrics that seem to take her music to the next level,” sophomore Sarah Young said.
Adele won six Grammy nominations last month, from album of the year for “21” and record and song of the year for “Rolling in the Deep.” Heavy anticipation preceded her nominations and still precedes the Grammy Awards in February, but Adele shared in the nomination glory with Bruno Mars and the Foo Fighters, also receiving six nominations. It was Kanye West, though, who became the night’s leader, receiving seven Grammy nominations, including song of the year for “All of the Lights.”
“She definitely deserved the nominations, she has an amazing voice, and is one of the very few artists who can sing well live, and [has] powerful songs,” junior Ghazal Farajzadeh said. “Kanye has been in the music business a long time so he deserves his nominations too. They both perform very different genres of music so I don’t think you can really compare them.”
Adele had throat surgery in early November due to a vocal chord hemorrhage and was forced to cancel her United States tour for this reason.
“I actually was going to the Adele concert with floor tickets before it got canceled,” Young said. “Hopefully she’ll reschedule and come back to Miami.”
However, Adele fans have something to look forward to. “Adele- Live at the Royal Albert Hall” brings her songs to life, backed with a live band. Included in the 90 minute DVD are songs from both her albums, as well as witty banter between songs. Adele may not have another concert for a while, but the DVD should help her find new fans and keep the old ones wishing for her speedy recovery.
