The moment the whole world has waited for is finally here; the release of the iPhone 5 has come. For months, millions of people anticipated the arrival of Apple’s newest weapon in the smartphone wars, and Apple finally released the iPhone 5 for all eyes to see on Wednesday September 12th.
“I checked Apple’s website at least twenty times that day,” said freshman Kayla Ladis. “When I finally saw the new design; my jaw dropped, it is absolutely amazing.”
Many differences exist between the iPhone 4S and the new iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 is eighteen percent thinner and twenty percent lighter than the previous design, and includes a new digital charger called “the lightning connector.” Siri (Apple’s voice recognition assistant) has also gotten a new update as well; it can now update sports scores, find places to eat, and make reservations.
“I’m most looking forward to the new design of the phone,” said sophomore Amanda Wheeler. “Now that it is lighter and longer it will be more convenient.”
With the death of Steve Jobs (Apple founder and long time CEO) last October due to cancer, many claim he iPhone 5 was Steve’s final project. According to pocketnow.com, Steve neglected the project of the iPhone 4S to devote his final months to the iPhone 5 project. It also claims that Steve would be very disappointed in this model of iPhone, and that it doesn’t have that special Steve Jobs wow factor. Now, without Steve’s input, the world will never know his opinion on the new iPhone 5.
“I think Steve Jobs would have been proud of the new iPhone 5,” said sophomore Conner Berg. “Even though Steve Jobs has passed it is very impressive that Apple is continuing to move forward.”
The iPhone 5 became available to the world on September 14th at 3:00 AM and sold out preorders in a matter of hours. Apple might not unleash “their nuclear war” within the smartphone industry as Jobs once threatened, but the heavy weight champ doesn’t seem ready to back down in the smartphone wars quite yet.
