Palmetto’s basketball teams landed themselves not one, but two victories on the 25 at the home game against Varela.
The JV team started the game off with a penalty, resulting in a free throw for Varela. Fortunately for Palmetto, they missed, but for Varela, this stunt seemed to foreshadow how the rest of the game would turn out.
At the end of the first quarter, Palmetto stepped it up and stayed in the lead for the majority of the time, winning 11-2.
During the second quarter, number 12 on Varela was injured, causing Palmetto to receive another foul. According to sideline witnesses, it was one of the worst in the game. Palmetto knows how to make up for its mishaps, and the final score of the second quarter was 20-15.
In the third quarter, sophomore Terence Wimbley, one of Palmetto’s starting players, had a turbulent game. Varela players were constantly pushing Wimbley to the floor, acquiring a handful of fouls themselves. Wimbley always got up and made those free throws and combined with the rest of the effort the team put in, and the third quarter ended at 35-21.
“Free throws can win and lose the game for you,” Wimbley said. “Luckily, I made them and the score went up. We played hard, we made shots, and it was a good game.”
Wimbley’s state of mind did not change at the end of the fourth quarter. Although Varela came close, victory was with Palmetto. The game ended with a final score of 41-40.
The varsity game followed shortly and had its own celebration. In addition to Palmetto winning the game with a score of 54-40, it was Senior Night for graduating seniors.
“I think everyone did a really good job tonight,” sophomore Ricardo Mullet, one of the starters on the JV team, said. “We’ve worked hard to get here and I’m really proud of both teams.”
