On Feb. 5, the Miami Palmetto Senior High boys lacrosse team split in two for a face-to-face scrimmage, also known as the blue and white game. The white team represented the offensive team and the blue team played defensive in an opportunity for starting players to go out for a game to remember.
Senior and varsity midfielder Benjamin Martinez plays as #19 and was one of the captains on the white team. As a starting player, he scored the first point for the whole game. Martinez shared the victory with the white team in a 5-4 win against the blue team.
Though Martinez has only played lacrosse since freshman year, the hype he feels with his team is something irreplaceable.
“The white team is going to bring home that dub and it’s going to feel great, but overall we’re going to get that chemistry, that chippiness, and our coach always says, iron sharpens iron,” Martinez said. “So even the people I’m playing against are going to help us develop as a team. So when we go into battle on Friday, and other times, we’re going to go in as brothers.”
On the opposing team, senior and varsity midfielder Benjamin Harris plays as #1, and was a proud member of the blue team for this game. Harris tied the game during the first quarter with the first point in the game.
While Harris also plays club lacrosse, he enjoys his bond with his school team more than anything else.
“I’ve been playing lacrosse for two years, and this game definitely brought us closer together as a team, because it gave some of the new guys the chance to get some game experience, and friendly competition is always healthy,” Harris said. “I was really excited to compete against the guys one last time before we go into the season together, and I’m hoping to build a better relationship with my middle line as we go into the season together.”
The varsity boys’ lacrosse team’s regular season will begin on Feb. 10, at home against Western High School.
