Florida’s current 15-week ban on abortion has been pushed by Florida’sSupreme Court to a six-week abortion ban. This ban had previously been approved by lawmakers last year. The Supreme Court ruled 4:3, now giving 30 days before this law goes into action.
Separately, Florida’s court approved the state constitutional amendment that would protect the right to an abortion in Florida. This clears the proposed law to go on the ballot as Amendment Four in this November election. This vote could potentially undo both bans, making abortion legal again. Constitutional amendments in Florida need the support of at least 60% of voters for approval.
Republican House Speaker Paul Renner spoke about the six-week ban being a good fit for Florida because it has exceptions for rape, incest, fetal abnormalities and the mother’s safety.
