Follow each problem step by step, calculate the appropriate set of numbers, combine like terms and lastly, simplify the answer. From one-on-one tutoring at Math Monkey to Mu Alpha Theta’s after-school tutoring sessions, junior Allen Liu uses his academic expertise to help students.
Since freshman year, Allen has been actively involved in Mu Alpha Theta. As the vice president of tutoring, he continues to use his academic ability to help struggling students.
“I can express my organizational capabilities as well as my tutoring ability,” Allen said. “I like helping people out when I can, so that’s why math tutoring at school and for Math Monkey has interested me.”
Allen received the Outstanding Science Student Award in his sophomore year and won Panther On The Move the preceding year. Hoping to become a specialized physician, Allen participates in lab work over the summer at the University of Miami and competes in the State Envirothon and Science Olympiad for Physics.
“It’s Ms. Shlachtman’s 20th year sponsoring Palmetto’s team, and we have a brilliant group going to states,” Allen said. “I’m doing my best to make everyone proud [and] bring home the gold in Science Olympiad for Physics.”
Besides academics, Allen still finds time to play on the school’s badminton team. He and some others are seeking approval from Ms. Angela Lima and Ms. Yvette McKinney to create Palmetto’s first Ultimate Frisbee Club.
“Badminton has really become a big part of my life. I play on the weekends as well as for the school’s team,” Allen said. “Ultimate is a really popular sport in Palmetto; I’m sure the club will have a dedicated member base.”
As Allen’s policy debate partner for three years, senior Juan Salamanca and Allen received second place at Catholic Forensic League (CFL) North Miami High School.
“He is driven, motivated, and yet realizes the small pleasures of things and the value of not taking everything so seriously,” Salamanca said. “He completes his tasks with conviction and a light heart.”
