After 28 years of music production, six Grammys and some of the biggest hits known to electronic music, Daft Punk waved goodbye to the music industry with their retirement announcement.

French electronic musicians Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter formed Daft Punk in 1993, with “Da Funk” becoming their first hit in 1996. A year later, the band earned  their first Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording. In 2013, their album “Random Access Memories” won the Grammy award for Best Album.

In addition to creating a plethora of robot-inspired albums over 30 years, the duo also created two films, “Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5system” and “TRON: Legacy.” They have worked with record labels such as SOMA, Virgin Records, Daft Lite and more.

Over the years, the band highlighted and developed their strengths through their music. While creating albums was time consuming, their attention to the small details helped to build their legacy. Additionally Daft Punk did several well-known collaborations with artists such as Kanye West, Pharrell Williams and The Weeknd. 

Kanye West’s song “Stronger” — whose release was a turning point for West’s career — was borrowed from Daft Punk’s hit single “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.” Daft Punk’s collaboration with Nile Rodgers and Pharrell Williams on the global hit “Get Lucky” streamed at No. 2 on the 2013 Billboard Top 100 Charts. Most recently, Daft Punk collaborated with Abel Tesfaye, known as The Weeknd, on his hit single “Starboy,” which made it to No. 1 on the 2018 Billboard Top 100 Chart.

To cap off their countless achievements over the years, they released a goodbye video called “Epilogue.” In the eight minute video, the duo walks in a desert, with one of them “destroying” the other with the push of a button. They both explode, with a snippet of music ending the video.
