The pressure of applying to colleges has been installed in seniors since freshman year. For as long as I can remember, college was always deemed as important; life-altering. “What are you going to major in?” “Where do you want to go?” These were questions that when asked, I had no answers to. But now, the time to answer them is here.
The college process consists of hard work, dedication and the skill of time management. As a senior, I know how difficult it is to manage regular high school classes whilst also applying to college. The process is a tedious one, and it may be stressful at times.
However, I like to look at it from a positive approach. Even though I am swamped with supplemental essays and filling out numerous forms, I know that eventually, it will all pay off.
In a couple months from now, the Class of 2025 will be off to college. It will be a bittersweet moment leaving high school, and saying goodbye to a lifestyle we have all become accustomed to, but it will all be worth it. Some of us will be living in a completely new state, attending our dream schools. Some may even be staying in Florida but attending one of the many prestigious colleges this state offers. In fact, some may decide that college just is not the right path, and that is okay! About 40 percent of college graduates are in jobs that do not even require degrees.
Once applications are in, and decisions are made, that is it! There is so much to look forward to after, like Grad-Bash, the traditional Universal Trip for seniors, and prom. You also get to look forward to life! After high school, there are so many possibilities; traveling the world, experiencing many “firsts” and meeting many new people.
So, for right now, here is what to do:
- Pay Attention To Those Deadlines
Multiple colleges in Florida have extended their deadlines due to the impact of Hurricane Helene. For example, Florida State University’s original Early Action deadline was Oct. 15. Now, it is Nov. 1, with materials due Nov. 8. This gives seniors more time to work on those applications, but they should also make sure to remember them, as it is important that they do not miss a deadline. A way that I recommend to help stay organized is by making a Google Sheet, and putting deadlines for schools on there. That way, everything I need is in one place.
2. Wrap Up Those Personal Essays
Personal essays at this time should be done and if not, nearly done. It is essential that all personal essays are PERSONAL. There are many cases where students write about other people in their essays, but it is essential that colleges only learn about you. The best tip is to be authentic and captivate readers.
3. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!
Hitting the “Review & Submit” button on Common App is a frightening experience. As a senior, I know how overwhelming thoughts can make us second guess our criteria, but it is important to be confident in one’s work. Thinking negatively will only bring upon negative energy. Of course, it is good to be realistic, but have some optimism. Everything that is meant for you will be, and everything that is not will pass.
The college application journey is just one of the many challenges we will face as we grow. It requires resilience and courage. As we navigate through this process, let’s remember to support one another, celebrate our achievements and keep our goals in sight. This experience is not just about getting into college;it is about discovering who we are and what we aspire to become. It is not a fast process, so do not feel like you have to have an entire life plan set up already. Make sure to take a deep breath, stay organized and embrace the journey ahead.
You got this!
