Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old student at the University of Pittsburgh, went missing on March 6 at 4:50 a.m.. She was last seen walking at the beach – The Riu Republica Hotel, just north of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic – where she visited on a vacation with several friends.
Around that same time, she went to the beach but failed to return. She walked to the beach with the five friends she was traveling with. Konanki reportedly stayed behind with one of the men on the beach while the rest of the group returned to the hotel.
When she did not return, Konanki’s companions searched for her before notifying authorities, according to the police source. The group reported her missing to hotel staff around 4 p.m., Thursday.
Authorities have been interviewing a man in his 20s who they believe was the last person to see Konanki last week. He is not considered to be a suspect at this time.
Konanki was described as a bright and ambitious student. She plans to become a doctor, pursuing a career in medicine.
Originally from India, she and her family have lived in the U.S. since 2006, and are permanent residents living in Loudoun County, Va..
She has been seen missing for five days now, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic, the Dominican National Police and the Dominican Prosecutor’s Office are conducting a joint investigation surrounding Konanki’s disappearance.
