On Dec. 10 at their annual Investor Day, Disney made several big announcements about different movies and television shows that premiere in the next few years. They also announced updates on Disney Plus and more of their streaming services. Here is an overview of some of the biggest announcements from Investor Day: 

Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Marvel Cinematic Universe Studios, a subsidiary of the Disney company, announced a couple of new movies set to premiere in the next few years. The studios announced a third Ant-Man film called Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The film brings back Paul Rudd as Ant-Man and other stars such as Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer. Jonathan Majors will make his Marvel debut as Kang the Conqueror, one of Marvel’s greatest villains. Marvel also announced a plan for producing a new Fantastic Four movie, but has yet to announce a release date. 

Regarding TV shows and series, the greatest announcements from the night arguably came from Marvel. The studio officially released trailers for an upcoming Disney Plus series about Scarlet Witch and Vision known as WandaVision, and for Loki, a Disney Plus series set to premiere in May 2021 about the Marvel villain played by Tom Hiddleston. Both The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Hawkeye finally revealed trailers and announced release dates for Mar. 2021 and Fall 2021, respectively. 

Disney Animation and Pixar Studios 

Some of the biggest announcements of the night came from Disney Animation and Pixar Studios. A new movie called Tiana — a spin-off of the 2009 film Princess and the Frog — premieres on Disney Plus, the company’ streaming service, in 2023. Perhaps one of the biggest movie announcements of the night included a new movie, Encanto, set in Colombia with music written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda worked with Disney on the music for Moana and has starred in several movies. Pixar Movies then announced a movie set to premiere in June 2021 called Luca, about a boy growing up in Italy. Lightyear, an origin story about Buzz Lightyear, hits theaters in summer of 2022. The infamous Toy Story character will be voiced by Chris Evans. 

Disney Animation and Pixar Films also announced several television shows and series based on already-released films. Some of the Disney Animation series include Baymax!, based on the 2014 film Big Hero 6; Zootopia Plus, based on the 2016 film Zootopia and Moana, based on the 2016 film Moana. Some of the Pixar Film series include Dug Days, based on Dug from the 2009 film Up and Cars, based on the 2006 film Cars.  

Lucasfilm

The Lucasfilm company, another subsidiary of Disney, also made some major movie announcements regarding the Star Wars series. In December 2023, the next Star Wars film, Rogue Squadron, will premiere. The company also teased the premiere and production of another untitled Star Wars movie directed by Taika Waititi, director of Thor: Ragnarok. 

Announcements from Lucasfilm about television shows and series also sparked excitement in Disney fans across the world. The company announced about 10 new Star Wars series set to premiere on Disney Plus. Some of the biggest included: Rangers and the New Republic and Ahsoka, two new spinoffs from the fan-favorite series The Mandalorian. The spinoffs, set within the timeline of The Mandalorian, feature crossovers. The company also released additional  details about several already-announced series such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor and The Bad Batch. Directors of Obi-Wan Kenobi brought Hayden Christensen back as Darth Vader while the directors of Andor brought back Diego Luna as Cassian Andor. 

Disney Plus

The first announcement made about the streaming service informed users that beginning in Mar. 2021, the price of a Disney Plus subscription increases to eight dollars. Currently, a subscription costs $7.99 per month. Additionally, Disney plans to offer a new entertainment bundle with ad-free Hulu, Disney Plus and ESPN Plus for $18.99 per month starting in Jan. 2021.
