In September 2020, musician Harry Styles was announced to star in the upcoming film “Don’t Worry Darling.” It was said that Styles would replace the American actor, Shia Labeouf, who had to leave the film as a result of scheduling conflicts. Fast forward to this year, viewers wait in anticipation for Sept. 23, the release date of the movie.

“Don’t Worry Darling” is categorized as a mystery and thriller movie surrounding the lives of a housewife and her husband living in an experimental community in the 50s, where she begins to question the secrets her community is hiding. Harry Styles will star as Jack, the husband, alongside the esteemed actress, Florence Pugh, portraying the 1950s housewife in the film. Since the announcement of Styles’ arrival in the film, there has been an abundance of speculation on whether he is suited for the film. Additionally, the singer’s fans are divided over their feelings about Styles pursuing an acting career.

“I’m excited. I hope he does good because I know there’s a lot of pressure riding on it and people are going to judge him harsher,” Miami Palmetto Senior High junior Sophia Graff said.

Although the film is not Styles’ first – his acting debut starting with “Dunkirk” – it is certainly gaining the singer more attention. The director of the film, Olivia Wilde, described one of Styles’ scenes as emotional and leaving the rest of the cast in shock. However, fans have mixed opinions on the director’s relationship with Styles. The two have allegedly been together for about two years, but it is now rumored that they have split.

“I’m glad that it ended or it’s rumored to have ended, even though they never publicized they were officially together. Everyone pretty much knew and I’m glad that it’s over just because I don’t think that was a very good choice for both the movie and for him. He just looks a lot happier now,” MPSH junior Isabella Diez said.

The social media app, TikTok, has been circulating videos regarding the movie and the drama along with it. From rumors that Wilde cheated on Styles, to Florence Pugh’s tense relationship with Wilde and her supposed unprofessionalism, people know more about the cast’s drama than the actual film. 

With a nearly sold-out tour, dedicated fans and a successful career, many fans wonder if pursuing acting in a drama-encircled film is the correct route for Styles. While some people believe Harry Styles should not continue acting, others encourage him to follow this new path.

“I think it’s cool that he’s expanding his horizons on the activities and in these roles that he has taken and so I think it could be beneficial for him,” Diez said.

The release of the film on Sept. 23 will present the answer as to whether or not “Don’t Worry Darling” brings light to Harry Styles’ pursuit of acting or if he should just stick to his music career.
