On April 15, Miami Palmetto Senior High hosted its annual Freshman and Sophomore Parent Night. The meeting took place in the auditorium, with the large screen being pulled down to display the powerpoint presentation.
Parents received information about the Student Services Department, which is designed to assist students in their educational, personal/social, and post high school development. Parents were also informed about the graduation requirements, as well as the best ways to get into contact with colleges.
“It was a success,” CAP advisor Linda Dwyer said, when asked about how the meeting went.
Parents were also introduced to Scoir, a college planning program that connects students to the colleges and their application process. Scoir can be used to research colleges, communicate with Dwyer and to take assessments for college.
There were nine major features parents were told their child should consider when it comes to picking the right colleges. These nine features are: location, costs, in-state versus out-of-state, size, type of campus, public versus private, room and board, student’s major and lastly, if the student has Florida Prepaid/qualifies for the Florida Bright Futures scholarship.
“I hope the major idea that parents can take away from this, is that their child will get into a college. So many approach me every day panicking and I always tell them, don’t worry. It will work out,” said Dwyer.
Parents were also informed about the College Board. The College Board is a platform used to sign up for AP’s and SAT tests. The College Board also gives students many opportunities to obtain scholarships and research what colleges they are interested in the most with personality tests.
The PowerPoint also emphasized the importance of emails, saying to make a professional email and to check it regularly. The PowerPoint also emphasized the importance of participating in many activities throughout a student’s high school career, whether it be clubs, sports or even summer activities such as volunteering at a camp.
