April 22, 1970, was the first day of Earth Day, a day that went down in history. Earth Day is intended to honor and celebrate our planet and raise awareness of environmental movements and the need to protect the Earth’s resources.
It is common for the current and future generations to be deemed the “Indoor Generation,” with stereotypes like “iPad kids,” who are scared to play outside and get dirty. We owe it to our planet to take advantage of the beautiful ecosystem we are surrounded by. Living in Miami, we are blessed to be able to step outside our front door and embrace the warm sun and refreshing ocean. We do not have to handle situations like snowstorms, avalanches or roads freezing over.
It is easy to get caught up in the swing of things and forget to give your body a rest. Going on a simple walk around the neighborhood can have numerous benefits, including an increased release of serotonin. So, if you feel disconnected from your outside world, here are more than a few ways to reconnect with nature.
Set Intentional Goals to Spend Time in Nature
These can be daily or weekly, but setting a certain amount of time to be outside is a great way to make sure you are mindful of how much time you spend sitting at a desk or staring at a screen.
Leave the Screen at Home
Whether your idea of being outside consists of going on a walk, playing catch with your dog or being on the water, keep your phone out of sight and on Do Not Disturb. It is your responsibility to be present during your path to reconnect with your surroundings. If you turn your focus to distractions, you do not get to reach the full potential of being outside, present in nature.
Go on Outdoor Dates
Take the opportunity to have friends and family join in on your journey. Plan picnics at the park, go to the farmers market or go on a bike ride.
Start a Garden
A cool way to connect nature is to add to it. Not only does starting a garden help the planet, but you may just find out you have a green thumb.
Join a Run Club
If you enjoy running, then this is the perfect activity for you. Miami has countless run clubs, based in Brickell, Coral Gables, Wynwood, etc. This is also a great place to meet new people, and hopefully, you can create new outdoor habits with them too.
Go to an Outdoor Fitness Class
If running is not your thing, do not worry. There are many other opportunities to participate in outdoor group activities. Ranging from yoga, pilates, boxing and even ballet, there is a wide stream of classes you can take in all areas of Miami.
Spend Time on the Water
While some may find it difficult to make the long trip out to water, that is not the case for us Miami natives. Go on a paddleboard, kayak, boat, canoe, jetski or anything you want, and connect with the water. Feel the waves, and the coolness of the water and maybe even see the sunrise or sunset.
Take a moment to appreciate the world around you. Practice an act of kindness towards your planet, pick up litter, carpool with friends or recycle your garbage. Small acts go a long way. Reconnect with nature and reconnect with yourself.
