The rise of artificial intelligence has consisted of constant technological advances. It seems like every month something new is released to make AI faster, cheaper and smarter.
DeepSeek is a company that recently released a product that makes AI extremely cheap. Due to this, DeepSeek is now a competitor to ChatGPT, which was initially thought to be the final stage of AI advancement. DeepSeek was founded in 2023 and is a Chinese-based company led by Liang Wenfeng. As a result of being a Chinese-owned company, the U.S. government has raised data concerns in fear that the communist Chinese government is involved in the DeepSeek business.
DeepSeek creates a product known as Large Language Models which can answer questions and produce text through the power of computers. By far the largest separation between DeepSeek and the “household” ChatGPT is cost. DeepSeek had claimed that they had built their machinery and programs for only $5 million, many do not believe this, causing scandal on various fronts.
“The thing about the five million dollars is that if they actually did build it for that price, you can’t really put that many security cautions on something with such a low budget. One thing is training the model, but then to teach it how not to hurt people, just simply not possible with $5 million dollars even with Chinese labor standards,” Miami Palmetto Senior High junior Rodrigo Duran said.
DeepSeek stands at the forefront of speeding up the process of AI potentially taking over human jobs, an unsurprising feat in today’s world.
“My prediction is that this will go into any industry, the ability to do insane amounts of processing and analytics for pennies is crazy, you can just get so much more done for so much less nowadays in a work environment,” Duran said.
DeepSeek is what we can expect for the future of AI development. Cheaper, more efficient and easier-to-use software and computers will become extremely widespread in the upcoming years.
