On Tuesday, Kevin McCarthy was voted out of his position as Speaker of the House. Until a new Speaker is inducted, Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina, handpicked by McCarthy, will take the place as Interim Speaker.
The Democrats have nominated Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker of the House, as they had previously done in January when voting for Speaker.
When McCarthy initially became Speaker, in January, it had taken 14 rounds of voting amongst the House of Representatives for him to be placed as Speaker of the House. It became the longest contest in the past 164 years.
The historic vote for McCarthy to be removed from his spot as Speaker was 216-210, eight Republicans had voted to remove McCarthy. The eight Republican ‘Yes’ votes were led by Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz. This is the first time in history that the Speaker of the House was voted to be ousted from the seat.
In his press conference, McCarthy said he will be leaving his position with pride and optimism.
