Jimmy Buffett, singer-songwriter behind “Margaritaville,” passed away on Friday, Sept. 1 in his Sag Harbor, N.Y. home.
A statement posted to Buffett’s website and social media announced the artist died fighting an aggressive form of skin cancer. He had been fighting Merkel Cell Skin Cancer for four years and had been receiving treatment.
“Margaritaville,” released in 1977, became Buffett’s highest-ranked single. The song grew quickly, boosting Buffett’s career, and “Margaritaville,” became a chain of restaurants, resorts and store-bought products.
His song stayed on the 1977 Billboard Hot 100 chart for 22 weeks, reaching Number 8 on the list.
This success led to his net worth of over $1 billion, and earned him the 18th spot in Forbes’ Richest Celebrities of All Time.
“Parrotheads,” and Buffett’s celebrity friends organized tributes to pay their respects and honor his reputation.
Buffett leaves behind his two daughters, Savannah and Sara, his son, Cameron and his wife, Jane Slagsvol.
