On March 4 around 4:30 p.m., Miami Palmetto Senior High principal Victoria Dobbs sent out a message to all Panther families informing parents that there has been a case of measles detected at the school. It was disclosed in the automated message that school and health officials will be reaching out to parents whose children may have been in close proximity with the infected student. As a precautionary measure, the school will be offering a free MMR immunization drive on March 10 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m..
Unvaccinated students with parental consent will be able to get vaccinated for measles at this time. The news arrived at a time where several regions in the United States are experiencing measles outbreaks. This includes states such as Texas and New Mexico, where increasingly more cases are being discovered. The outbreak in Texas and increasing numbers nationwide has prompted response from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., with him recommending that people get the measles vaccine. The case discovered at MPSH is the first reported case in Miami-Dade County this year.
