This week, Miami broke weather records, with two heat advisories in a row on Thursday, Oct. 12 and Friday, Oct. 13. Though not unusual in South Florida, it is uncommon for temperatures to be so high this late in the year. On Friday, a high daily temperature record of 95 degrees Fahrenheit was broken at Miami International Airport. This is the second consecutive day a high daily temperature record was broken in Miami-Dade. On Thursday, a 93 degrees Fahrenheit reading at MIA broke the previous daily record from Oct. 12, 2020. West Palm Beach tied the record high temperature at 93 degrees Fahrenheit, set Oct. 12, 1943.
A southwestern flow with a front over Central Florida is causing the flow over the surface to be from the southwest, drawing moisture into the area. On top of that, being in warmer air, it is also very humid, making the temperature “feel” a lot hotter than it is. This mid-October weekend period led to Friday’s advisory through 6 p.m., where it is believed to remain in the high 90s, before an upcoming cold front in late October, early November.
