Every year, the unexpected occurs. In fact, the World Series has been won by nine different teams in the past ten seasons, with only the Red Sox winning twice (2004, 2007). A third championship to come? A definite possibility according to both ESPN and Sports Illustrated Magazines, as both have the Sox winning the championship. Maybe, but not so fast. Here are my World Series teams, Red Sox excluded:
>> The Wild-Card Wonder: Even though Bobby Cox has left and Chipper Jones nears retirement, the Braves have improved, especially with the addition of Dan Uggla. Their young offense will make powerful strides this year.
Best case scenario: The Braves’ slugger Jason Heyward proves his potential, winning the MVP Award and leading the Braves all the way to the World Series.
Worst case scenario: Heyward’s power lays dormant and the Braves struggle to reach the postseason.
>> The Ol’ Yanks: Rivera, 41. Posada, 39. Jeter, 36, Rodriguez, 35. Age is certainly an issue. But players like Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano have hit their primes and show no signs of slowing down any time soon. Plus, they added Rafael Soriano and Russell Martin for greater depth.
Best case scenario: A-Rod wins his fourth MVP award, the second-most in history (Barry Bonds has won 7), and the Yanks win yet another championship.
Worst case scenario: Old age hurts, as Jeter and Rivera struggle to improve upon their dismal 2010 seasons. Another short-lived playoff run.
>> World Series Champs: The Bronx Bombers take care of business for the 28th time and send the Braves packing just like they did in 1998. Yanks win in 6
