Returning after two consecutive years of Zoom informational meetings, Miami Palmetto Senior High’s Senior Parent Night returned, taking place in the auditorium from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Occurring for over a decade, the event aims to inform the parent/guardians of the senior class’ future endeavors and tasks to come during the 2023-2024 school year.
Led by Activities Director, Elizabeth Valero, Student Services Department Chair, Lisa Mallard and College Assistance Program Advisor Linda Dwyer, the event focuses on all aspects, ranging from class trips to college application advice.
“Mrs.Valero will give an activities update, Ms. Mallard and all the counselors will give the student services update, and then I will give my college application update, and it’s the same presentation I’ve given to all the senior classes, but now parents will be able to see that,” Dwyer said. “This is senior specific. This is how you can sign up for yearbook ads, this is information about graduation and graduation requirements.”
For all high schoolers and parents, senior year differs from previous class experiences, so the event is vital for delivering all important information and receiving questions from those parents who are not yet accustomed to the responsibilities seniors have.
“It’s a lot to take in, and I think that it’s valuable for parents to realize how much their kids have going on. Applications are super complicated, so I think it helps parents realize first of all, ‘Oh my gosh, my baby is graduating,’ and number two, ‘Oh my gosh, my baby is under a lot of pressure,’” Dwyer said.
MPSH seeks to inform through all platforms, including social media and the school’s website. However, the informational meeting allows faculty and staff to promote content beyond technological bounds.
“As a parent of a member of the Class of ‘23 I found it extremely helpful, just to map out his final year in high school to learn about all the events that he could potentially participate in, and to make sure I could remind my own child how to stay on top of all of his graduation requirements and to make sure he knew everything that he needed to do on his end, so that the school would be prepared to send information to the colleges he was applying to,” PTSA President and Palmetto class of 2023 and 2027 mother Elyssa Lewis said.
