After three days of striking for better wages, port workers across the U.S. have agreed on a tentative deal with the United States Maritime Alliance.
Specifically, South Fla. workers at PortMiami and Port Everglades began striking following a stalled agreement on a six-year contract.
The International Longshoremen’s Association went on strike starting Oct. 1, with several demands including a higher pay of up to 62%. The last ILA coastwide strike took place in 1977 and lasted for three months. The biggest concerns that arose from the strike were not in regards to gas, but other consumer goods, including retail products.
Following Fla. Gov. Ron DeSantis’s state of emergency for Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, all workers have returned to the port, but negotiations continue and the new date to finalize the contract is Jan.15, 2025.
