Old dog, new tricks

Known as the strict dean of discipline, Mr. Steven Batten has transitioned over the summer to becoming Palmetto’s new athletic director. Taking over Ms. McKinney’s legacy, he strives to make Palmetto a top athletic program in the state of Florida.
The Panther: What type of student were you?
Steven Batten: I graduated from Palmetto in 1982. I was an above average student but not excellent. I went to UF graduated from there with a degree in physical education.
TP: What’s your experience with athletics?
SB: I played football for Palmetto as a strong safety and defensive end. My coaching experience has included football, basketball, soccer, softball and lacrosse for a total of 25 years in high school athletics. I coached Miami Palmetto to a state championship in softball in 2008.
TP: Why did you want to become athletic director?
SB: Being an athletic director is something that has always intrigued me. I feel honored to be able to lead Palmetto and give back to the school that gave me so much.
TP: How do you deal with “changing hats” so to speak?
SB: I used to be the Dean of Discipline and moving to athletics there seems to be some parallels being the athletic director is much more fun. My role is to help put coaches in positions where they can win.
TP: How do you plan on changing the athletic program here at Palmetto?
SB: I am hoping to bring students/teachers and parents back to games. Becoming a Panther Family supporting all sports and each other is my goal.
TP: What’s your history at Palmetto?
SB: Well, I went to Palmetto and graduated from Palmetto. My three children have graduated from Palmetto. I’ve been a teacher, administrative assistant, coach and now athletic director. This school has become my family, I spend more time in this school than I do with my family.
TP: If you could pick a quote that captures your personality, what would it be?
SB: ‘Do what is right, not what sounds good.’ If you’re always trying to do what is right, you never have to explain yourself, and that’s something I try to do everyday.
