Palmetto finishes first!

Who knows the boiling point of 30.0g of sodium phosphide when added to 45.0g of lithium nitride? This year’s Chemathon team sure does. The PreAP Chemathon team, under the direction of Dr. Yuria Sharp, reigned victory at the Chemathon competition.
The tournament consists of an individual written test, laboratory experiments completed as a team, as well as an “oral test” in which a question projected on screen must be answered by team as a whole.
“My favorite part of [Chemathon] are the labs,” junior Ross Rosen said. “We sometimes get to see ways in which chemicals interact that we had never used before.”
The PreAP Chemathon team consists of sophomores Kaylee de Soto, Sebastian Fernandez, Nicolas Pereda, Zachary Rouviere, Benjamin Tordi and Zachary Wilks. The team stole the show at the March 13th Chemathon competition at Barry University, coming in first place overall as well as first place in the oral competition and third place in the lab section of the competition. They successfully beat out 15 other schools including Ransom Everglades Upper School, University School of Nova Southeastern University, Christopher Columbus High School and Mast Academy High School.
AP’s Chemathon team, comprised of six AP Chemistry students– including juniors Ross Rosen, William Nunez, Shalla Sorensen, Jadie Palenzuela, Kayla Spiegelman and Jonathan Schleien– also enjoyed their time at the Chemathon, despite the fact that they did not win any team awards. However, Ross Rosen made his team proud by placing third place overall in the individual component of the competition.
“I’m very proud of my Chemathon students,” chemistry teacher Dr. Sharp said. “They work very hard.”
