Throughout the past week, the Miami Film Festival has been held at multiple locations around the community. I was lucky to catch some movies and talk with famed actress, Molly Ringwald.
On Friday, April 5, my mom and I headed to the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Knight Hall to watch the festival’s opening night film, Thelma. The movie revolves around a 93-year-old woman who gets scammed out of ten thousand dollars, thinking her grandson was arrested. I do not want to spoil the rest of the movie, but I can tell you that many laughs and tears arose throughout the screening. Thelma was the perfect movie to watch in a large group and became one of my favorites from this year’s festival.
The next night, April 6, I attended the acceptance of the Creative Vanguard Award by Molly Ringwald. I had been a big fan of Ringwald’s work since I watched a movie marathon of all of her 80’s films with my parents. It was truly a great night, and Ringwald even answered my question during the Q&A portion.
On the last night of the film festival, I went to see the closing Film, Ezra. Famed actor Tony Goldwyn directed the film about the relationship of a father and his son on the autism spectrum. The movie stars Bobby Cannavale, Robert Deniro and newcomer William Fitzgerald. The movie comes out in theaters on May 31 and will give watchers many tears and laughs.
As this year’s film festival comes to an end, it is a perfect tradition based in Miami that is easily accessible to enter. For next year’s festival, I hope to see double the number of movies I saw this year.
