On Sunday, part of the famous California Highway-1 collapsed into the ocean due to a storm the night before. The bridge is on the Big Sur coast, which is just south of San Francisco. Part of the side of the bridge collapsed over the water. The rain on the night of the collapse was estimated to be two inches per hour.
The portion of the highway surrounding the bridge remains temporarily closed, while construction teams work to repair it. Essential drivers in the area will be led by convoy for the next few days. These convoys will only be at 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.. Many news sources suspect that about 1,600 motorists are trapped near Big Sur National Park. Those trapped slept in their vehicles, temporary lodging or emergency shelters.
