On May 3, junior Rebecca Loveless received an award for her exemplary citizenship and effort around Palmetto. Out of a whopping 3,093 students, only two Panthers received the award.
“I was very surprised and I was honored that I won. Thank you so much Mr. Garcia, it means a lot that you would nominate me for this award,” Rebecca said.
When entering her sophomore year of high school, Rebecca joined the track and field team. After realizing her passion for the sport, she joined both track and field and cross country this year. She spends Monday through Friday practicing and conditioning for the teams after school.
“I like cross country and track and field, not only because of the exercise, but also because of the great team experiences,” Rebecca said. “Our teams are like family and we all encourage each other to do our best.”
Rebecca was born in Ft. Pierce, Florida, but moved in 2004 when her dad got a job opportunity in Miami as a hospital administrator. She now volunteers at a Baptist Outpatient Center.
“It’s a program for teenagers to volunteer in an office, kind of like a secretary where they file, fill out checks and make pamphlets,” Rebecca said. “I had to fill out a few papers and go to a meeting where they show us what to do.”
Rebecca is active at her church and serves in the children’s ministry on a weekly basis. She attends various mission trips and participates in Vacation Bible School (VBS).
“I really like working with kids, so one of my favorite things to do is help out at VBS,” Rebecca said.
At her church, she watches videos about kids who started their own community service activities and hopes to some day start her own organization for students.
Rebecca looks forward to participating in community service in the future.
“This year has definitely been the best in terms of community service and receiving the award,” Rebecca said. “I hope my senior year is just as good.”
