Previewing Drowsy Chaperone

Starting tonight, Thursday, Apr. 19 and continuing on to Apr., 25th, and 26th, Palmetto’s drama department will take the stage once again to perform the Tony award-winning production, Drowsy Chaperone.

The Drowsy Chaperone will take audiences back to the 1920s. In the satirical piece, characters portray an exaggerated version of the play’s time period, tapping into the typical ‘20s stereotypes, such as gangster and drama queen personas.

“[The costumes] are very typical 1920s, more flapper girl for our ensemble members; it’s very colorful,” senior costume designer Shannon Zalesky said.

The musical is a show within a show where a celebrity is marrying an oil tycoon. In preparation for their wedding, conflict ensues as a bunch of mixups and misunderstandings almost call of the big day. The story is told by the “Man in Chair,” in which he intervenes throughout the play.

“The show is a lot of fun and it’s supposed to be a very interactive kind of feel,” Zalesky said. “It’s supposed to make you happy every time you see it and it’s not supposed to be serious; it’s supposed to be very fun loving.”

The drama department has worked tirelessly on this production, many putting in over 60 hours of rehearsal and preparing.

“We’ve been working on this since the very end of our last play in mid-January. We went right into this one,” junior actress Paris Imar said.

The Drowsy Chaperone is a comedy for all to see.

“You’re gonna be laughing; you’re definitely gonna be laughing,” Zalesky said.
