Every season seems to possess a new challenge for Palmetto’s football program. One day, a new head coach takes over; the next, the starting quarterback transfers to South Ridge. Despite all these changes however, Palmetto knows how to keep it together on the field. This season so far, Palmetto already conquered a significant 49-0 win over Miami Lakes and a 28-14 win over Coral Gables under new head coach Matt Dixon.
Palmetto needed to find a new quarterback this year after the previous QB Troy Cook took his talents to Southridge Senior High. Seniors Johnny Perez and Matt Cole, two football standouts, worked endlessly through two-a-days and practice to quickly fill the spot.
“I am happy to have the chance to start,” quarterback Matt Coll said. “I will continue to work hard to lead my team through a successful season.”
Head coach Matt Dixon decided to take an additional approach to the quarterback situation. Instead of blindly naming a QB under the pressure of the situation, Dixon worked not only with Coll, but with Johnny Perez as well. Although two games have been played, a “starting” quarterback hasn’t officially been announced.
“For the Quarterback situation, [Cole] and I are supposed to be splitting time until someone gets the starting spot,” senior QB Johnny Perez said.
As for the offensive line, returnees continue to standout both on the field and in the weight room. Leading the offensive line is Omar Martin, Roy Lennox, Chris Winkler, Dwight Pruitt, and Malik Avis.
“I’m very proud of our o-line,” Coll said. “They’ve come together through injuries, allowing us to excel in the running game as well as giving me time to pass.”
Whether it is skill or utter luck, Palmetto football has started their season off with a bang. Dealing with a new head coach and two rookie quarterbacks serve as a real test. Whatever it may be, it’s working because the ruthless Panthers are 3-0.
“Panther football has been much overlooked,” Coll said. “This year we are trying to make a statement!”
