On Thursday, Oct. 10, tennis legend and 22-time Grand Slam title winner Rafael Nadal announced an official plan to retire from the sport.
Nadal plans to retire after playing in the Davis Cup Finals in Madraga, Spain, representing his country for the last time in the tournament.
Nadal’s last two years of tennis have been plagued with injuries, which many fans believe is a reason for his retirement. After suffering a hip injury that took him out of the 2023 season until December, a muscle injury prevented him from playing in the Australian Open in January.
Carrying with him the title of best clay-court player of all time, Nadal will be remembered for his 20 years of being undefeated in the Davis Cup, his two Olympic gold medals and over 90 career titles.
Despite the announcement, Nadal cannot say he is absolutely certain of his retirement. He left open the possibility of a return, saying he will probably retire but cannot be 100% sure of his future.
