The backlash from both politicians and the public has ensued following U.S Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s hospitalization for prostate cancer complications due to an alleged lack of transparency. Austin remains hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center since being checked on Jan. 1, due to complications arising from surgery to treat prostate cancer, a condition previously undisclosed to the public and the White House.
Doctors at Walter Reed disclosed that Austin underwent a minimally invasive surgery on Dec. 22 after an early detection of prostate cancer during screenings. While his recovery initially seemed positive, complications emerged, including severe abdominal pains and a urinary tract infection, leading to his recent readmission to the hospital.
President Biden was unaware of Austin’s prostate cancer diagnosis until Tuesday morning, three days after their last conversation. Austin’s transfer of authority to his deputy during his ICU stay went unreported for two days, leading to further scrutiny.
Lawmakers from both parties expressed concern, with some calling for Austin’s resignation. The House Armed Services Committee has launched a formal inquiry into the handling of Austin’s undisclosed hospitalizations, emphasizing the criticality of transparency in matters of national security.
Biden maintains his confidence in Austin, despite the controversy. Nevertheless, the White House has initiated a review of notification protocols for Cabinet members, highlighting the need for improved communication regarding health-related issues.
