Returning to a tradition that was popular many years ago, Miami Palmetto Senior High kicked off Halloween with a haunted house from Oct. 30-31. The event was orchestrated by the drama department and student council, with the goals of putting the scare into the holiday.
On the first day, the haunted house opened its doors solely to kids from elementary and middle schools in the community. Then, on Halloween Day, the haunted house was open to all MPSH students, who had the opportunity to brave the terror during their respective lunch periods. The event took over the once familiar school auditorium and made it resemble a chamber of horrors.
Anticipation for this event reached MPSH students well in advance, with many sharing their thoughts regarding the event.
“I’m most excited to see all the decorations and enjoy it with my friends, who have been non-stop talking about it. I hope to have fun and cannot wait to see all the costumes as well,” junior Alexandra Estevez said.
The event was originally planned for Halloween in 2020 but was put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now it is open to the community and the student body, as a result of the tireless efforts of MPSH’s drama department and student council.
Sofia Arnau, junior and chief designer of the haunted house, hoped that the Halloween extravaganza’s success would become an annual event at the school.
“This project is my baby. Students on the 30 can expect a free community event, the pumpkin trunk or treat, [with] a kid-friendly theme. However, on the 31, which will happen [during] both lunches, we will have jumpscares, body drops, pictures of gore and lots of other goodies,” Arnau said.
The event charged five dollars on the 31 and holds the record of being one of the scariest events MPSH has ever held.
“I know some people who don’t think this event will be scary, but trust me even our own scare actors were surprised by the haunted house. I’m very excited to see everyone’s reaction,” Corpse Bride actress and senior Nicole Mancebo said.
This Halloween extravaganza was more than just a gathering; it was a testament to the creative spirit of the MPSH community. As students, parents and teachers come together to celebrate this cherished tradition and holiday, there is a certain sense of unity and shared excitement.
“I’m really excited to go with my friends and I love that I go to a school with so much school spirit. I hope this reoccurs next year as well,” junior Emily Ramos said.
With Halloween just around the corner, the anticipation for this spine-chilling celebration reached fever pitch. Screams and laughter blended into an unforgettable Halloween experience, giving students a day of unforgettable terror and delight.
