For the last day of Senior Spirit Week, the class of 2022 wore red clothing and their biggest “red flag”.

Red, white and Palmetto blue: from Feb. 22 to Feb. 25, Miami Palmetto Senior High’s hallways flooded with seniors showing off their school pride in celebration of their last year of high school.

Senior spirit week is a week dedicated entirely to the senior class, with each school day featuring a new theme. Some of the themes this year included Senior Citizen and Senior Takeover Day, Wild West Wednesday and Red Flag Friday.

“We tried to do something out of the box that no one has seen before,” Student Council Chief of Staff and senior Catherine Bales said. “We are trying to bring things that are pop culture so that kids will enjoy them and everyone will participate.”

On Tuesday, Feb. 22, Senior Citizen and Senior Takeover Day took place. Some seniors dressed as their favorite teachers and took over their classes for the day, while others dressed up with canes and grey hair for their senior citizen costume.

“I was Mr. Batten. The best part was having the walkie talkie with me all day. We would talk to each other back and forth,” Bales said. “Just laughing and goofing off was the highlight of that day.”

Wild West Wednesday brought out everyone’s inner cowboy as seniors came to school decked out in cowboy boots and hats, flannels and a darn good attitude.

“My favorite part about senior spirit week [was] being able to dress up in great costumes,” Student Council President and senior Nicolas Garavito said.

On Thursday, Feb 24., the senior pep rally and senior panoramic occurred. Seniors wore classic Palmetto colors to show off their Panther pride as they gathered together to take their class photo. The band, dance teams and cheerleaders took the floor to perform at the pep rally, where seniors also participated in various games and won superlatives.

To finish off the week, Red Flag Friday had many seniors decked out in their best red-colored gear: red shirts, red pants, red pom-poms, red sunglasses and more. On top of repping the class color, seniors wore their biggest “red flag,” something about them that may be considered problematic.

Senior week celebrates seniors and their hard work throughout high school as they near graduation.

“It is that moment when they realize that this is their last pep rally, this is the last time that they will dress up in high school, this is the last time that everyone in the class will be together before graduation,” Palmetto Activities Director Elizabeth Valero said. “It is special to see everyone get so sentimental and nostalgic in that moment.”
