The Kansas City Chiefs, during their dynasty, get to their fifth Super Bowl in six seasons and third straight with a chance to do something no team has ever done, win three consecutive Super Bowls.
The Chiefs find themselves in a Super Bowl rematch from two years ago against the Philadelphia Eagles, only the fourth time in National Football League history there has been a Super Bowl rematch between two quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes was the two-time Most Valuable Player and three-time Super Bowl MVP for the Chiefs against Jalen Hurts for the Eagles.
The public’s view of the matchup is centered around the annoyance of not just the Chiefs’ constant way of dominance the last five seasons, but particularly this season where the team has faced countless games and scenarios where everything would always seem to work out their way. Whether it be a controversial penalty or a miraculous game-saving play, it just seemed the Chiefs would always somehow end up on top. So much so that in the Chiefs’ 19 games this season, they have won 12 of them by one possession. These constant escapes made by the Chiefs have also been attributed to the stigma around the idea of the referees giving the Chiefs too many calls and protecting Mahomes more than any player. Again, in each of their last 11 postseason games, the Chiefs have had fewer penalties than their opponents.
On the other side, the Eagles have had another good season this time with newly acquired MVP finalist and offensive player of the year finalist Saquon Barkley leading the way with countless NFL and Eagles’ records broken this season, including being 29 yards away from having the most rushing yards in a season in both the regular and postseason.
However, many believe this time around is different for the Eagles with many calling this the greatest Eagles team of all time and the depth chart does not say otherwise. After a spectacular 2024 draft class with the additions of cornerback duo Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, the rookies have dismissed all allegations of a poor secondary in Philadelphia with both rookies finishing as defensive rookie of the year finalists. Another shock to the Eagles season was with linebacker Zack Baun finishing as a defensive player of the year finalist. Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio also finished as an assistant coach of the year finalist to cap off the Eagles mass award nominees.
Going back to the offense, the Eagles have shifted more towards the run game with Barkley but the prestigious wide receiver duo of AJ Brown and Devonta Smith have not been needed a ton so far this postseason but will more than likely see the most action they have in a while against the defending back to back Super Bowl champs.
The Chiefs look to beat a much tougher Eagles team than before and cement themselves as the first NFL team to successfully “three-peat.”
