This Wednesday, Steve Scalise won the Republican Party conference vote becoming the Republican party nominee for Speaker of the House. Winning in a vote of 113-99, Scalise is set to replace recently ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy. After a vote last Tuesday, McCarthy was removed from the position. Scalise’s main opponent in the conference was Jim Jordan, a representative from Ohio.
Scalise, the representative for the first district of Louisiana, is currently the House Majority leader, voted unanimously to that position in 2022.
While Scalise may have won the in-conference vote, doubt still remains as to whether he has enough votes to become speaker. Several Republican lawmakers have already said they will continue to back Jordan over Scalise.
Prominent Republican lawmaker, Lauren Boebert, has already said “I’m voting for Jim Jordan on the floor.”
Despite this, high-ranking Republicans have indicated that the speaker vote could happen as early as 3 p.m. this Wednesday.
