Welcome to the Student Council Newsletter Blog, a source for the Miami Palmetto Senior High students, faculty and community to receive important information regarding all Student Council events and activities. After each Student Council meeting, expect a blog about all upcoming events and what was discussed.
Old Business:
- Pumpkin Chuckin’ took place on Monday, Oct. 28 along with the Trunk-or-Treat event for local elementary school students. While the pumpkin-launching event was described as more “interesting,” featuring a variety of functional trebuchets, the Trunk-or-Treat event featuring all clubs was extremely successful.
Recent Performances and Events:
- Students voted in the school-wide mock election sponsored by Miami-Dade County Public Schools, with results released on The Panther Paper website.
- The Pinecrest City Music Project Benefit Concert, “A Night of Stars,” was held Monday night at 7:30 p.m. in collaboration with Southwood Middle School. The concert featured five other community schools performing music from famous movie scores across history.
- On Thursday night, MPSH Thespian Troupe 1298 hosted An Evening of Theater, where they performed pieces from their district competition repertoires. The event took place in the black box theater.
- The Interact Talent Show will take place on Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m.. Tickets are $5 at the door on the day of the show.
Fall Activities:
- The Fall Harvest Festival will take place on Nov. 15 during both lunches. All clubs will collect donations for the Thanksgiving food drive, and student council members are encouraged to donate decorations.
- The Fall Dance Showcase will be on Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium.
Recruitment:
- Future Panther Tours started on Nov. 7 at 8 a.m. A new initiative from the recruitment and activities departments will showcase all of the school’s positive aspects to prospective Panthers.
- Panther for a Day will take place on Dec. 4, the school’s most prolific recruitment event for all local eighth graders to experience the best of what the school has to offer.
Staff Appreciation Efforts:
- Regarding Pen Pal assignments, student council members will soon receive their teacher/faculty Pen Pal — a member of the school’s faculty to whom they will give gifts throughout the year, celebrating their birthdays, the holidays, etc.
Class Boards:
- Seniors reflected on an approaching fundraiser at Chill-Nsoon, the board plans to meet with sponsor Armando Gonzalez in the coming week.
- The juniors have raised over $17,000 in cake sales, with one week remaining, completed a promotional video for their fundraising efforts and hosted a fundraiser at Shake Shack on Nov. 6. They plan to host a cabinet meeting in the coming week.
- The sophomore class recently held a Chill-N fundraiser and is planning a cabinet meeting to take place sometime in the month.
- The freshmen have introduced their “Fresh28” financial plan to fundraise for their class. Their first Chipotle fundraiser is set for February and their cabinet meeting is in November.
House of Representatives:
- The House of Representatives, with Speaker of the House David Cohn, will host their Constitutional Amendment session in January, following a Student Council legislative session in the December meeting.
- The House has spoken in a poll to alter the Academic Integrity Policy to apply to the Student Council. A first offense results in removal from their positions, and a second offense results in the prohibition of running or holding any office in high school.
The Marketing Board was named Senate Committee of the Month, and junior class President Ruby Pelz and Student Council Vice President Noah Coulton were named “Best Dressed.”
