Throughout history, feminists have been highly oppressed and looked down upon. Women have made countless efforts in the past to counter these oppositions and continue to do so today. Miami Palmetto Senior High’s very own Women’s Union has worked tirelessly to educate and band together to combat misogyny.
The club holds meetings monthly, hosting them after school on the MPSH campus.
“Meetings are super fun. We have great discussions, great turnout and it’s really cool to see what a fun and safe space we can create,” junior and Women’s Union Social Media Manager Yaar Dotan-Fuchs said.
The club goes beyond only celebrating women. It actively creates opportunities to uplift and inspire young women. By spotlighting a “Woman Crush Wednesday,” on Instagram, the club highlights achievements across various fields, sparking meaningful conversations among members. This educates but also encourages members to recognize the diverse ways women shape the world, fostering a deeper appreciation for their impact on their daily lives.
“Sometimes I ask the board for ideas and we think of who is popular at the moment or what is something going on in the world that can relate to who we pick. I usually go for female musicians, they’re killing it in the charts and in nominations so I feel like it’s important to honor that,” Dotan-Fuchs said.
The MPSH Women’s Union is a space dedicated to celebrating women. The club honors the contributions and successes of women in history, while also educating members about the issues that affect them.
“My favorite part of the club is that we get to celebrate women. We want to educate about things that affect them but also learn about their contributions and successes,” Dotan-Fuchs said.
Dotan-Fuchs shares how the club has impacted her personally. She has been in the club since freshman year and the club has influenced her high school experience.
“The club I feel provides for me a space to really get to explore more about womanhood and learn new things about what women go through. I feel like it’s incredibly important to have a space to talk about those things,” Dotan-Fuchs said.
Dotan-Fuchs hopes that other high school students over the years will be able to feel the same impact she feels because of the Women’s Union. The club continues to stand as a show of progress, hoping that future generations of students can feel inspired and supported in their efforts to combat misogyny and celebrate the contributions of women throughout history.
