On Jan. 31, 2021, CBS plans to air the 63rd Grammy Awards ceremony virtually. Trevor Noah will host this year’s show. Many artists and fans eagerly awaited the nomination announcements. 

Best New Artist:

This award will be given to the artist who the recording academy believes made major music advancements this year. The nominees this year include: Ingrid Andress, Phoebe Bridgers, Chika, Noah Cyrus, D Smoke, Kaytranada, Megan Thee Stallion and Doja Cat. 

In 2019, Ingrid Andress released her first single “More Hearts Than Mine.” Then, in 2020, she released her first album, “Lady Like.” Her music is her way of telling a story. With her music, she has listeners reminisce the feeling of regret, isolation, and having a sense of what it feels like to have someone leave.

In 2017, Phoebe Bridgers released her first album, “Strangers in the Alps,” as a solo artist. She was most famous for her album in 2020, Punisher. She is an American indie musician and many of her songs relate to how when things don’t always go the way wanted to and it feels as if everything is crumbling down. 

Chika went viral posting a video of her Kanye West freestyle in 2018. Her first album, “No Squares’,’ released in 2019. She also dropped her first EP, “Industry Games,” this year. As an artist, Chika’s songs consist of her political verses, love and her finding confidence.

Noah Cyrus’ debut single, “Make Me (Cry),” came out in 2016. In 2018, Cyrus released her debut album, “NC-17.” Through her music she broadcasts her life and what she is currently going through.

In 2019, D Smoke won the first season of “Rhythm & Flow.” After making a name for himself, he released an album, “Black Habits” in 2020. This album was a big part of his Grammy nomination. The album is about his life and how on the outside it was made to be seen perfectly but on the inside he was struggling. 

Kaytranada began his career by making mixtapes and remixes under the name Kaytradamus in 2010. He released his first album, “99.9%,”  in 2016 with the recording label XL Recording. Last year he released his album, “Bubba,” which turned out to be a big hit. The music he makes has a good beat and something that everyone can dance to.

Megan Thee Stallion has made a name for herself this year with songs like “Body,” and “Captain Hook.” Many people have used her songs on TikTok and made dances, as well. She embraces feminism and body confidence through her music. 

Similarly, Doja Cat has come out with multiple songs this year that have gained popularity, especially on TikTok.She has released songs like “Say So” and “Candy,” both where she speaks her mind about current things that happen in her life.

Best Pop Solo Performance:

This artist who will receive this award earned it because they have made music which featured excellent vocals. The artists who have been nominated are: Justin Bieber for “Yummy,” Doja Cat for “Say So,” Billie Eilish for “Everything I Wanted,” Harry Styles for “Watermelon Sugar” and Taylor Swift for “Cardigan.”

Justin Bieber’s song “Yummy” is nominated for a grammy. Bieber started his career singing on Youtube, until he got noticed by Scooter Braun. His first single, “One Time,” became a big hit. The song “Yummy” is about his wife Hailey Bieber. Many speculate that it could have a darker meaning behind it. That it could be about his life working for the music industry and what it is really like.

Doja Cat is currently running for a Grammy with her song “Say So.” She first started out as a soundcloud rapper, but then she began getting recognition for her music. In 2019, she released her second album, “Hot Pink,” which became a very popular album. One of the songs in particular became very popular, as “Say So” has been on the Billboard Top 100 chart. The song talks about how she felt when the guy she had feelings for wouldn’t say how he felt about her. 

Billie Eilish’s song “Everything I Wanted” got nominated for a Grammy. She began her career at the age of 14, when she released “Ocean Eyes.” Since then, she has not stopped making music that many people love to listen to. “Everything I Wanted” talks about how even though everyone expects her to have the perfect life, she does not. Since she has fame, people do not expect her to be dealing with mental illness. This song talks about the experiences she has had with everything in her life revolving her fame and mental health.

Harry Styles’s song “Watermelon Sugar” got nominated for a Grammy. Styles began his career at the age of 16. He rose to fame as a member of the band One Direction. After One Direction’s split in 2016, Harry continued to write music on his own and became a successful solo artist. The song “Watermelon Sugar” describes having a good time, almost a euphoric feeling when with someone.

Taylor Swift’s song “Cardigan” got nominated for a Grammy. Swift began her career at the age of 16 when she released the album, “Taylor Swift.” Swift then made the album, “Fearless,” with which she won a Grammy with before. The song “Cardigan” is one out of three songs that is telling a story about love. This song tells the story of the girl who gets cheated on by her boyfriend.

There are still many more awards other than the ones listed that will be given out on Jan. 31. Album of the Year, Best Folk Album, Best Music Video, Best Gospel Performance/Song, Best Rock Song, Best Latin Pop or Urban Album, Best Rap Album and more are all on the list.
