As movie theaters begin to open back up, movies continue to release as well. Many upcoming films have largely incorporated either staggered releases or theater releases alongside launching through streaming services. With that, the month of March does not disappoint with its big releases.

On Mar. 5, Walt Disney Pictures released “Raya and the Last Dragon,” its 59th animated film. The film follows the titular character of Raya as she embarks on a journey through the land of Kumandra to find the last known dragon in existence. 

The film’s location and cultural influence takes inspiration from Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and many others. The film has a star-studded cast of Asian-American actors including: Awkwafina, Daniel Dae Kim, Sandra Oh and Benedict Wong.

Disney decided to release the film in theaters as well as on their Disney+ streaming platform.

On the same day as “Raya and the Last Dragon,” “Coming 2 America” released. The film serves as a sequel to the 1988 film “Coming to America.” The plot revolves around King Akeem (played by Edde Murphy) of the African country of Zamunda, who returns to Queens, New York where he originally found his bride in the first film.

The film’s cast includes many returning actors as well as new faces such as: Eddie Murphy, Asensio Hall, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, James Earl Jones, Wesley Snipes and many other famous Black actors. The film released exclusively through Amazon Prime Video.

On Mar. 18, Warner Bros. Pictures plans to release a brand new director’s cut of the “Justice League.” This version of the film, orchestrated entirely by its original director, Zack Snyder, has excited fans who felt unsatisfied with the original 2017 release. Snyder had ceased working on the original film after the suicide of his daughter in 2017. This led to the film’s writer, Joss Whedon, to complete post-production on the film.

The hashtag #releasethesnydercut trended on social media soon after the 2017 release, and on May 20, 2020 Zach Snyder officially announced the project. While originally planned to release as a four-hour mini-series, HBO Max decided to show the film as a four-hour film instead. 

Finally on Mar. 31, the month concludes with a blockbuster film: “Godzilla vs. Kong.” The film comes as the fourth title of the newly forming Legendary Pictures’ “Monsterverse” which includes previous titles such as: “Godzilla,” “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and “Kong: Skull Island.”

The film comes as a titanic clash between two huge franchises that has not occurred since the original “King Kong vs. Godzilla,” a 1962 Japenese film. HBO Max and theaters will simultaneously begin to show the movie.
