“Be a monster, with nature’s ultimate Monster Muscle formula!” This slogan, publicized by the brand Monster Milk, exemplifies one of the many protein powder drink mixes that attempt to reel in customers by claiming instant muscle growth. As the use of dietary supplements increases among high school students, many buy into the misconception that protein enhancements, in the form of shakes or bars, stand as a necessary aid to healthy weight-loss and buildup of muscle mass. Recent studies by the Livestrong foundation show that most individuals, including athletes, consume ample amounts of protein in their regular diets and that the excess ingestion of protein from supplements may cause heart disease, digestive problems, and liver and kidney damage.
“I drink protein shakes because they allow for healthy muscle recovery and an increase in strength,” junior James Knippel said. “After exercise our bodies burn muscle and it’s necessary to replace them with protein.”
While protein exists as a major component in the growth, development, and repair of muscle cells, commercial protein supplements often cost more than natural sources and can induce negative side effects. When a person artificially satisfies protein needs through the use of shakes, bars, and assorted powdered drinks, the body misses out on other essential nutrients that would otherwise be acquired through natural protein sources such as eggs, fish, and meat. Also, when added to diets with adequate amounts of protein, the excess calories are stored in the body as fat and cause unhealthy weight gain.
On a more drastic note, unneeded amounts of protein may link to diverticulitis, colorectal cancers, heart disease, and liver and kidney problems that may result in organ failure. The body, forced to perform extra work in order to process the protein, creates a large amount of harmful byproducts.
“People need to be savvy consumers,” anatomy teacher Lynn Evans said. “Before you take something you need to research it. The US has no regulation for supplements and it’s scary.”
Protein remains a fundamental component to many bodily processes including muscle buildup, typically important to athletes, body builders, and those seeking to lose weight. However, the results of various medical studies emphasize the importance of careful calculation of protein consumption, whether in the form of ordinary foods or supplements. In order to utilize nutrient supplements in a healthy way, people must learn proper guidelines and avoid exceeding required amounts.
“Protein supplements coupled with proper hydration, the presence of exercise and taken in small amounts has proven to be very beneficial,” varsity lacrosse player Dylan Silverman said. “I watch my diet very cautiously and haven’t had any problems.”
