On Dec. 9, University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill resigned, following her congressional hearing called to discuss antisemitism on college campuses.
During the hearing, Magill did not give a clear “yes” or “no” response to whether calls for genocide against Jewish people would violate the University of Pennsylvania’s code of conduct. This comes as a result of an increase in reports of antisemitic attacks and rhetoric on college campuses, stemming from Israel versus Hamas conflicts.
Other top universities, including Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, were represented by their school Presidents at the Congressional meeting. They also failed to explicitly answer questions asked to them by the House Committee on Education and Labor.
Specifically, Magill faced criticism from Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who called Magill’s response “A failure of leadership” as well as a bipartisan group of over 70 members of Congress who sent a letter to the school’s board members.
Magill will continue to serve as President of the school until a new president is named, and then she will join the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania’s Carey Law School.
