Three people were killed just after 1 p.m. on Saturday after a gunman opened fire at a Dollar General in Jacksonville, Fla., in what was identified as a racially motivated attack.
Officials describe the shooter as a white man in his 20s, who shot and killed himself after the shooting. Following the attack, officials found what is described as his three manifestos pointing out ideologies of hate and disgust, as well as his motive for the attack. The suspected shooter had told his father over text only moments before the attack to “check his computer,” and his father found these manifestos and called the authorities.
Investigators believe the shooter committed the act alone. He wore both a tactical mask, vest and was armed with an AR-15 rifle and handgun. Photos of the weapons revealed swastikas drawn on the side in white paint.
The Dollar General store is located only blocks away from Edward Waters University — a historically Black institution — where students were instructed to stay in their residence.
