On Wednesday, at 11:45 a.m. local time, University of Las Vegas police responded to calls of shots fired. The shooting killed three and injured one who is in stable condition at a nearby hospital.
The suspect, 67-year-old Anthony Polito, went on a roughly 10-minute rampage in which he started on the fourth floor of UNLV’s Lee Business School. He went to several floors until he was killed in a shootout with two university detectives outside the building. Polito was a business professor who had previously taught in Georgia and North Carolina.
A motive has yet to be confirmed, but it was noted that Polito had applied for several professing jobs at various universities and colleges in Nevada, but was denied each time. Polito possessed more than 150 rounds of ammunition and had a list of targets, though none of these targets fell victim.
Two of the victims identified were business professors Patricia Navarro-Velez and Cha-Jan Chang. The third victim’s name has yet to be released to the public. 39- year-old Navarro-Velez was an assistant professor of accounting and had been teaching at UNLV for almost five years, while 64-year-old Chang had been teaching business students for more than 20 years. This shooting comes after a string of shootings in Texas in both Austin and San Antonio this past Tuesday. These shootings left six dead and three injured, and the suspect has now been arrested and charged with capital murder.
