The Trump Administration is asking the U.S Supreme Court to allow part of his executive order restricting birthright citizenship to take effect. On March 13, the government filed emergency requests to limit the rulings from lower courts in Maryland, Massachusetts and Washington, which blocked Donald Trump’s orders.
Trump’s order, which was signed on his first day in office for his second term, aims to stop children born in the U.S. to undocumented parents from automatically coming citizens. The administration argues that lower courts do not have the power to block the order nationwide. Instead, they want the court to let the rule apply only to the individuals and groups that have challenged it.
Despite facing legal challenges, the government wants the Supreme Court to allow the policy to move forward. However, many experts believe the plan may not succeed due to the 14th amendment which guarantees citizenship to everyone born in the U.S.
