On March 11, President Donald Trump announced his plan to twofold tariffs on all imports of steel and aluminum products from Canada to 50%, due to Ontario’s decision to put a 25% tariff on electricity exports to the U.S..
Trump announced on his Truth Social page that the commerce secretary will be adding an additional 25% tariff on metal products, which will begin on Wednesday morning. In an interview, Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford announced that the 25% surcharge on electricity will affect New York, Michigan and Minnesota. He mentioned that if Trump were to add more tariffs, he would implement another 25% tariff charge to the three states.
Another one of Trump’s requirements for stopping the tariffs on Canada was for Canada to drop the Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on differing U.S. dairy products. Trump said that he will be declaring a National Emergency on electricity within the areas that are threatened by this.
Trump’s tariffs extend not only to his USMCA allies, but to countries like Brazil and South Korea who have been entering the U.S. duty free under carve outs with steel and aluminum imports. By implementing these tariffs, he vows to aid the struggling U.S. industries.
