On April 8, in a recent statement on his social media, former President and 2024 presidential candidate Donald Trump said that he believes abortion should be a state matter rather than federal.
During his interview, Trump showed his disapproval of the federal involvement of these issues.
“My view is now that we have abortion where everyone wants it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation, or perhaps both. And whatever they decide must be the law of the land. In this case, the law of the state,” Trump stated on his social media.
He said previously that he supported a 15-week federal ban as long as it was not a case of rape, could harm the mother or in cases of incest.
The former president also proudly stated that he was the person responsible for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and wanted it to go into the hands of state voters.
The video on Monday had a lot of retaliation from anti-abortion groups. They feel like the standard for republican candidates to require an abortion should be 15 weeks.
If Trump does end up leaving this issue up to states, then many states could see the amount of time for abortion go down to 6 weeks.
