On March 11, President Donald Trump restated that the United States must obtain and gain control of Greenland during his address to a joint session of Congress. Trump believes that having authority over the island will not only give the U.S. more control but also provide national security. In Greenland’s recent parliamentary elections, the Demokraatit Party won the vote by 30%, resulting in an upset. While this result was unexpected, it did not determine a transition toward independence, nor immediate ties with the U.S.. When votes were cast, voters were aware of Trump’s plans and comments regarding the control of Greenland.
As of now, Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, as it obtains some of its foreign policy. Múte Egede, Greenland’s prime minister, has stated that he is not interested in being “for sale,” in other words, becoming a territory of the U.S..
