On Sept. 8, Miami Dolphins’ star wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by police outside of Hard Rock Stadium. Hill was pulled over for speeding before the Dolphins’ first game of the season. Hill, who says he respects police officers and wants to be one when he retires from football, said he had “no idea” why the police handcuffed him.
Hill went on to play for the Miami Dolphins that afternoon, scoring an 80-yard touchdown that helped the Dolphins win their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars 20-17. Hill celebrated his touchdown by putting his arms behind his back with his hands together, mimicking being handcuffed.
Dolphins’ defensive tackle Calais Campbell, who was briefly detained prior to the game, said he was driving into Hard Rock Stadium when he saw Hill handcuffed and pulled over to help. Campbell, a 17-year National Football League player, ended up in handcuffs, saying officers told him it was because he “disobeyed their direct orders.”
On Sept. 9, 105 minutes and 33 seconds of police body-camera footage was released showing the interaction with Hill, Campbell and others involved at the scene. A police union criticized Hill as “uncooperative.” In response, the Dolphins Organization released a statement criticizing the officers’ conduct.
