As raging wildfires spread across Los Angeles burning thousands of acres, killing 24 people, animals and destroying thousands of homes, LA has received help from all around the world, even eastern Europe.
Last week, fire crews from Mexico arrived in LA to assist local firefighters in taming the fire. Canada has also joined the fight, and fire crews are on their way to assist in any way they can. Recently, a very unexpected act of solidarity was shown from Ukraine, as the president sent firefighters to help. This offer was after Donald Trump Junior criticized the LA Fire Department for donating supplies to Ukraine during their ongoing war with Russia.
Last Sunday, Jan. 5, a video statement of President Volodymyr Zelensky announced he’s sending 150 firefighters to help calm the fires. In this statement President Zelensky told Los Angeles to prepare for their possible participation in the battle against the wildfires said.
While fires spread across the city, local and international efforts continue. Crews from Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona all working consistently to stop the spread of the flames.
The California National Guard has praised Ukraine as it shows the strength of international partnerships. They have also praised the 30-year-old alliance that the country and state have had through the State Partnership program. This partnership has proven to play a crucial part in both places during times of need.
